Euphorbia pulcherrima is indigenous to Mexico. The Aztecs called it Cuitlaxochitl (star flower) and used it for medication.
In 1828, physician, botanist, and statesman Joel Roberts Poinsett introduced the plant to the United States while serving as the first U.S. Minister to Mexico. Poinsett is honored by an act of Congress declaring December 12, the day of his death in 1851, National Poinsettia Day.
Today, the Paul Ecke Ranch in California is a major producer of poinsettias in the United States.
