BOSTON, Mass., August 28, 2007 - Boston By Foot, Inc. announces its September Tour of The Month is a 90 minute walking tour of Historic Roxbury. This unique tour will be offered Sunday, September 30 at 2:00pm.
Settled by the Puritans in 1630, Roxbury was one of the first towns founded in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Located at the remote end of the Boston neck, Roxbury was important for its agriculture and played a pivotal, yet often overlooked, role in the American Revolution that includes the Midnight Ride of William Dawes, Jr. With the 19th century came industry and immigrants making Roxbury home to a myriad of ethnic groups. More recently, Roxbury has been undergoing significant residential and commercial redevelopment.
The tour includes Fort Hill, Elliot Square, Roxbury Highlands and a park created by Frederick Law Olmsted, the prolific landscape architect whose work includes many college campuses and public parks, including Central Park in New York. Among many historical figures, the tour will also feature the neighborhood of William Lloyd Garrison, the prominent 19th century social reformer and founder of the abolitionist newspaper The Liberator.
The 90 minute walking tour departs promptly September 30, 2:00pm, from outside the Roxbury Crossing T station on Tremont Street (Orange Line). Admission is $15 per person and reservations are not required.
