Boston By Foot Presents: Boston's Back Bay: Making Land & Making History

BOSTON, Mass., August 6, 2007 - Boston By Foot, Inc. will celebrate Labor Day with its annual five-hour Big Foot tour of Boston's Back Bay. The tour extravaganza will take place on Monday, September 3 at 10:00am.

Boston's Back Bay

Boston's Back Bay is an urban design jewel with its Victorian Second Empire and Italianate townhouses, churches, and rich cultural attractions. The Back Bay land-making and development began along the edge of the Public Garden and proceeded westerly toward Kenmore Square over the course of three decades.

Tour Route

Boston By Foot's comprehensive exploration of the Back Bay will begin in the Boston Common where the story of Boston's original land begins and stroll through the Public Garden to examine an earlier land-making project. From there the tour will proceed to Bay Village, a small neighborhood that preceded both the Back Bay and the South End. The tour will stop for lunch in Copley Square among the architectural treasures of New Old South and Trinity Churches, and the Boston Public Library. Following a stroll along the Commonwealth Mall and Newbury Street, the tour will conclude on Massachusetts Avenue near Charlesgate East.

Tour Information

The 5-hour walking tour begins Monday, September 3, 10:00am, from the Boston Common near the corner of Charles and Beacon Streets. Admission is $15 and reservations are not required. About Big Foot

Boston By Foot presents an annual Labor Day Tour for the history enthusiast and those wishing to walk a few extra miles on this holiday. Each year Boston By Foot selects a different topic and senior docents prepare this custom tour through their own research. "It takes about a year to do the research and planning for the Big Foot tour," according to Olivia Sanwong, co-chair of Boston By Foot's Big Foot committee. "While it may seem a lot of work to do for only one day, I think it makes it that much more special. This is a one-of-a-kind not offered anywhere else."
