BOSTON, Mass., February 12, 2007 - Boston By Foot, Inc. announces its annual Lecture and Field Trip series will begin April 14, 2007. This series is offered to anyone with an interest in Boston's history and architecture, and is required for those interested in becoming a Boston By Foot volunteer guide.
The Lecture and Field Trip series is a 6-week course offered on Saturdays. Every week students participate in a lecture, a discussion group, and a walking tour of one of Boston's historic neighborhoods. Lectures are given by distinguished architects, historians and engineers.
Students who want to become a volunteer guide for Boston By Foot receive a discount but must commit to leading 6 tours during the year. Although no experience is necessary prior to the course, students must complete weekly papers and take a final exam. "Many guides did not have any prior knowledge of either architecture or Boston history before taking the course," according to senior docent Barbara Clough of Everett, MA. "All that is required is a passion for meeting new people and a desire to promote public awareness of Boston's precious heritage and vitality."
This year, Boston By Foot guides will host informational sessions in area public libraries prior to the lecture series. Attendees will learn about being a docent and will have the opportunity to ask questions about taking the course. "For many volunteers, the lecture series sparks a life long quest to learn even more about Boston." said senior docent and session organizer Mary-Anne Morrison or Arlington, MA. "Over 200 individuals from all walks of life become guides, and many travel from communities outside of Boston to attend the training and lead tours."
Boston By Foot is a non-profit organization founded in 1976 to promote public awareness of Boston's architectural and historical heritage through guided walking tours. Scheduled daily tours offered from May through October include the Freedom Trail, the North End, Beacon Hill and the Back Bay. Boston By Foot also offers custom tours throughout the year for corporate, educational, and private groups, on-site presentation lectures for schools and organizations, and special events highlighting a particular theme or neighborhood in Boston.
Over the past thirty years, Boston By Foot's trained and enthusiastic volunteer guides have explored Boston neighborhoods with over 210,000 visitors and residents.
