The James Jackson Storrow Memorial Embankment
opened in 1936. A linear park designed by Arthur
Shurcliff in the style of Frederick Law Olmsted,
the Esplanade, as it came to be known, was shifted
in 1951 with the construction of the James Jackson
Storrow Memorial Drive. Shurcliff then created a
more natural coast along the Charles River with
its landmark interior lagoons.
